2020 Volnay 1er Cru ‘Santenots’, Domaine Thierry Pillot
This high class, family domaine has been at the forefront of Chassagne’s resurgence over the past decade. Along with the likes of Alex Moreau and Pierre-Yves Colin Morey, Paul’s son, Thierry, has been fashioning beautiful white wines that combine perfectly intensity, vibrancy and a sens of terroir. Thierry is a relatively early picker and the wines always have a wonderful tension running through them, unadulterated by oak as Thierry keeps new oak percentages to a bare minimum on all his cuvées.
It’s always a treat tasting with Thierry Pillot. The seemingly never-ageing vigneron is always so engaging and so passionate about what he is doing that the wines seem to come alive, even before one has tasted them. The signature style here is one of raciness and poise, with real focus on crystalline fruit and a strong sens of minerality and place. We do have a couple of new wines in the range under his own name, with a nez Saint-Aubin 1er Cru ‘Les Castets’, a 5 and a half hectare steep-sloped vineyard facing south-east, planted on fairly rocky soil and a Meursault ‘Narvaux’, another better known stony vineyard that likes to flirt with the idea of 1er Cru status.
