Alberto Tanzini worked in finance in London for several years before heading back to his native Italy to become a vigneron. He bought the estate in 2003 and ploughed a lot of time and money into the vineyards and winemaking facilities. From day one, he was anxious to focus on Sangiovese, and 90% of the vineyards are planted with eight different clones of this variety. There is also a little Alicante and Pugnitello planted. Maremma lies in the southern part of Tuscany and consequently is a little warmer than the more established regions of this beautiful part of Italy. Alberto, therefore, has to work hard to maintain the balance and freshness of his Sangiovese whilst enjoying its heady expressionism. These are wines full of character and personality, and a sense of place. Each year they seem to become more complex and refined, and yet pricing remains incredibly fair.
