Charles van Canneyt has established himself as one of the very best vignerons in the Côte de Nuits
Since taking over Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat from his grandfather Alain Hudelot, who founded the domaine in Vougeot back in 1962, Charles has established himself as one of the very best vignerons in the Côte de Nuits, evolving the domaine into one of the most sought after estates in the whole of the Côte d’Or. In 2012, he decided to create a side-operation when he teamed up with chef and Beaune restaurant owner Johan Bjorkland (Bistro de l ’Hôtel), with the aim of supplementing his Domaine offerings with some well-chosen, very limited production wines from top sites, with an emphasis on reds.
In terms of vinification, he copied the approach of his Domaine wines with gentle extraction, thoughtful use of new oak and a soft touch during élevage, with the aim of making wines of typicity, understatement and refinement. Each year the range differs slightly, although a few wines consistently appear every year such as his lovely Charmes-Chambertin, which is especially good in 2022. We tasted through the whole range of about twenty wines last week and have selected our favourite ten to feature in this offer. Volumes are limited with only a few barrels per cuvée, although as the exclusive UK agent for Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, we are quite well placed to squeeze a few extra cases out of Charles should we need to.
